Press: Are You Hard-pressed?
Thursday, October 11, 2007
BACKGROUNDWhether we know it or not, earth's atmosphere is pressing against us with a force of 1 kg/cm2. Physically, that’s about 14,000 kg for an average adult! The reason why we do not feel its effect is the air we breathe in equalizes the atmospheric pressure.
In life, we may also be hard-pressed mentally, emotionally or spiritually in their various ways. Likewise, without God's overcoming power within us to equalize the pressure being applied upon us from outside, we can be overwhelmed.
TALK ABOUT IT1. What are you hard-pressed by at this point of your life now? Describe how you feel.
2. In scuba diving, why is it detrimental to hold your breath while descending to more than just six meters? What should you do? How do you cope when life’s pressures continue to mount?
3. Read James 1:2-4. What could be “trials” that James is referring to? What is God’s plan in these trials?
REFLECT ON ITIn James 1:2, why was the word “consider” used (in some versions, “count”)? What is the lesson here?
LIVE ITWhat adjustments would you make to your approach the next time you are hard-pressed?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Be joyful always; pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus
